The Conversation (1974) was tense, from beginning to end. I didn't like any of the characters, but I felt kinda bad for almost all of them, and I think that's what they were going for. Good movie.
Vozvrashcheniye (2003) won't make you feel good, either, but I really liked it. Now I know how to portray psychological destitution: you just color everything bluish-grey. Russian helps.
Haven't gotten too far into Becket (1964) yet, but I'm enjoying it. Normans, Saxons... Man, I stink at History. Falls right out of my head. Wait, Becket was a Norman. WTF.
iterum! What is a Norman?
I totally wish he'd said, "My fellow Americans! This is a histor-... an hist-... a fucking important day."
