Work is slow, so I wasted some time thinking of unlikely-yet-possible movie-monster-spawning conditions. I like the idea of an alien-engineered, secretly-drop-shipped creature best, because it avoids a lot of problems.

I finished Half-Life this weekend. The most unpleasant creatures were the floating Jiffy-Pop Hindu monkeys. Gonarch was truly impressive, as [livejournal.com profile] apogeeperigee promised. I bought The Orange Box, and started up Half-Life 2, but I stopped early on, tired of so much hunchbacked button-pushing, and creeped out by the newer graphics. I'm not used to this level of realism.

Should I bother with Blue Shift? It looks like HL1 without the hazard suit, so far.

Hey, do I have Thanksgiving, Half-Life, or both to thank for this huge knot in my back? It feels like the previous one, only on the other side, and not as painful.

huh

Yesterday was Half-Life's tenth birthday*. I bought the game many months ago, and I haven't finished it. By sheer coincidence, after ignoring it forever, I blew about two hours on it yesterday. I have to finish this thing, so I can get The Orange Box, and step up to 21st-century graphics.

* If you don't own it, you can get it for 98 cents through tomorrow. (1998. You see what they did there.)

Sometime in 2004, a PC game called Advent Rising will be released. Neat idea: Humans are revered as mythical beings of immense power and cosmic importance by millions of cultures across the galaxy. When one of them learns we actually exist, it does the only reasonable thing: try to kill us all, because we could be dangerous! That sounds pretty good, but here's the best part: Orson Scott Card is collaborating on the back story. Last April, he was quoted: "What I found most interesting about collaborating with Majesco and GlyphX on the Advent Rising project was their sincere desire to create a game in which the story served as the springboard for all the other elements."

This sounds like an even better way to escape reality than Civ III. :)
