Another day, another limp phone call with a recruiter about a $20/hr temp job.

Yesterday, a friend advised me to dumb down my resume. There's too much stuff in there for a fella without an advanced degree, and that creates a gap.

I don't know about dumbing it down; my dad never received a degree beyond a BS, but he ended up senior staff at Lincoln Lab. Maybe times are different now, but I'm sure there's got to be some appreciation for somebody who has done it all themselves.

I haven't "done it all myself," but I've never padded my resume, and I'm sure as hell not going to strip it.

Well, by that I meant sought out learning and experience on your own, not because it was an assignment or a hoop you had to jump through in order to get a piece of paper.

(This is the time to cash in on all your friendships. You know A LOT of people. I bet at least a few of them - like me! - know people in your industry that might be able to help out. Don't think of it as begging for your friends to help you, either. It doesn't take two seconds to forward a resume with a "Check this guy out - he's brilliant". And, you would do the same. :))
