My mother herself has said so: New England isn't what it used to be -- we've ruined it. My family isn't the only one who feels this way. I've heard many other Puerto Ricans, Mexicans, Colombians, etc., comment on the way we have invaded these nice, orderly, clean, friendly cities and towns, and gradually changed the entire feel of the area with our slobbery, crime, noise, disregard for the law and common decency, and so forth. We have earned our reputation. (It is unfortunate that nobody notices the nice spics -- the quiet, law-abiding, friendly ones. Only the loud, obnoxious, criminal assholes are conspicuous.)

Anyway, I'm in my car, on my way to visit the parents, when my cellphone rings.

Mom: Are you on your way?
Me: Yep. Not too far, though. Just got in the car, really. What's up?
Mom: Go on back home. Listen to what just happened...

My parents were rear-ended near a Hispanic grocery store. There were no injuries, but there was some damage to the bumper. The guy, a fellow upright Hispanic citizen, comes out of his car and tells my dad there's no damage, and they should just forget about the whole thing. My dad insists on getting his insurance information, pointing out some obvious damage. The guy tries to get back into his car. My dad steps in his way. The guy says he just wants to pull over out of the street, and shoves my dad. It is clear from this and other nonverbal cues that he has no insurance and he intends to leave the scene. Dad, in a moment of unbrightness, climbs onto the guy's hood. He slides and stumbles off as the guy speeds away.

Me: Did you get the plates?
Mom: Yeah. They're temps. And you should have seen the witnesses. The street was full of people. When we looked up afterwards, there wasn't a soul in sight. We called the police... The police are here. Gotta go. See you Thursday, okay?

the complete fucker! And it always shocks me how people who see a crime slink away...and sadly this crap is common everywhere I forget the case that is the most notable, a women in NYC back in 67 is killed just outside of her apartment on the street...she was stabbed, she yelled the guy went away...she got up her stairs still calling for help the guy comes back and she yells, fights him off a little and he goes away again. This repeated for well over an hour no one called the police, no one came forward to help identify the victim. No one bothered to help at all. This is common to the US of A and most likely the rest of the world as well...well, maybe not Canada, eh?

is your dad ok?

I remember reading about that stabbing incident. Everybody assumed somebody else would do something about it. :P

Dad's pissed, but unhurt. Thanks.

Your dad needs a kettlebell in the trunk of his car. That way, he can just drop in back of the wheel of the punk's car, thus preventing a speedy getaway.

I'm glad your dad is okay.

that is an astonishingly common attitude among earlier generations of immigrants towards later ones. Chisel's father is the same way about recent Mexican immigrants. "Why can't these people learn English? I did! And I was legal! Illegal immigrants want amnesty?"

So glad that it didn't get uglier and that everyone is okay.

The girl's name was Kitty Genovese, by the way. The murdered one, I mean.
