I'm under siege,
Jan. 2nd, 2005 04:10 pmbut I snuck a supply run through. I'm full of Ibuprofen and water and caffeine-free tea and Zinc and Vitamin C and broth. Do they work in sync? Do they get in each other's way? Do they work at all? I don't know. Anyway, I have enough sinus pressure to... to really not like it. I sound like a lo-fi recording, and so does everything else. I bought more Kleenex. I have hot-packs on my forearms and in my shoes. I cranked the heat.
So New Year's was fine, and exchanging gifts with my girl was wonderful, but I'm not gonna write about that now, because I'm running like a tap. I'm pretty sure I'm going to feel like refried ass on my birthday, but that's okay. I'll celebrate later.
darla was a dream, offering to help at every turn. I just prefer to battle viruses in private. Snot everywhere, frequent snorting, grumbling... Not in nice company, if I can help it.

Date: 2005-01-02 11:44 pm (UTC)- zinc works, but only in lozenges or some weird nasal spray. The spray has bad side-effects, and the lozenges work great but their absorption is inhibited by citric acid. Some companies use citric acid to flavor the lozenges, or combine them with ascorbic acid to include vitamin C. Those are worthless. So, yes to the lozenges, but avoid fruit juices or the vitamin C pills around the time that you take the lozenges. And you have to take lots of them.
- Echinacea works, especially in tincture form, but you need to take a lot of it frequently. I put tinctures of it in everything I drank (and of course drink lots of fluids). Generally I didn't notice it, except in plain water in which case it was a little bitter.
- Vitamic C works, but not as a preventative (none of these reduce the likelihood of getting a cold, only the duration that it lasts). You also need a lot (I think around 2000 mg), or two big doses of time-release capsules. More does not help and may even reduce the beneficial effects.
All of these work best at the very onset of the cold.
Good luck!

Date: 2005-01-05 07:58 am (UTC)Thanks for the pointers. The cold died in a day, but it was replaced by asthma. D'OH.
I'm much better today, though. Almost ready for work. Thursday is the goal.
