Having worked in Alaska and gone drinking with the fishermen, I can tell you that these are pretty sucktastic jobs. They work you to the bone and beyond, and it's dangerous work. People get maimed for life or die. Just falling in the water and not being hauled out for ten minutes or so will give you hypothermia, even in August. Also, you might end up working in a canning factory rather than on a boat, where at least you are in the open air.
All that said though, Alaska is an amazing place, especially if you are being paid to be there.
actually, it isn't just college kids that do this--there's a population of fishermen who work in Alaska all summer then live in Baja Mexico all winter on the proceeds of what they earned in Alaska. It's a risky life, but there can be some good payoffs :-)
