paramedics brave and strong
May. 4th, 2006 09:46 amI spent yesterday afternoon driving the very, very nice fluorescent microscope in the Garlick Lab at Tufts. The mission: Capture blue and green images of Ki67 slides of skin punches, then superimpose them, so the percentage of dividing keratinocytes can be estimated. I hadn't 'scoped in a long time, so it took me a few minutes to get the groove back; but once I did, I felt quite at home. The feeling of fluid, efficient, graceful competence -- at anything -- was a nice change of pace from the past... um, four months. (Nothing brings the Black Dog like a pile of bad coincidences.)
saturniidae, who works upstairs from the scope room, further improved my week by dropping by and reminding me that I don't really suck.
Pedro the Lion sang to me in the dark:
Several friends came to his grave
(position stage)
His children were so well-behaved
(open light, set filter, position sample)
When the priest got up to speak
(jump to 40X obj, set capture, go live)
The assembly craved relief
(focus, select field)
But he himself had given up
(fine focus, photograph blue)
So instead he offered them this bitter cup
(change filter, change capture, photograph green)
You're gonna die, we're all gonna die
(close light, close live window)
Could be twenty years, could be tonight
(merge images)
Lately I have been wondering why
(save three image files)
We go to so much trouble to postpone the unavoidable
(repeat twice per slide)
And prolong the pain of being alive
(next slide...)

Priests and Paramedics
Date: 2006-05-04 05:34 pm (UTC)Paramedics brave and strong
Up before the break of dawn
Putting poker faces on
Broken bodies all day long
The neighbors heard a fight
Someone had a knife
It must have been the wife
Husband's lost a lot of blood
He wakes up screaming Oh my God,
Am I gonna die?
Am I gonna die?
As they strapped his arms down to his sides
At times like these they're taught to lie
Buddy just calm down, you'll be alright
