One bag of fancy-ass coffee.
One copy of Mexican Slang plus Graffiti.
One Imogen Heap album, Speak for Yourself.
One greeting card, featuring the instantly-recognizable Diego Rivera, The Flower Carrier, explaining that sometimes people just need care packages.

Thank you so much.

*****

Imogen Heap's voice really messes with me.

(I just noticed the similarity between [livejournal.com profile] darla's profile and hers.)

Have you ever heard her sing with the group Frou Frou?

I think she's playing live locally soon, too.

She is so unbelievably even more amazing live than she is recorded. If you have any inclination at all to go, go.

She's playing the Avalon Ballroom this coming Nov. 11. All ages, and tickets aren't too shabby. I think I need to go. I've been in love with her latest album for some time now.

Yup. [livejournal.com profile] couplingchaos introduced me to Frou Frou. I had heard Imogen Heap's voice before, but I had no idea who she was until then.

I know not the Imogen Heap. Those smears are makeup, right? Not on the pic itself.

What are the music/vocals like?

>>What are the music/vocals like?<<

_Wonderful_.
I know only of a handful of songs but I'm enamored of them.

I am afraid to track it down and listen. I'm a sucker for good/unusual female vocals and I don't need another sonic addiction.

She's the love child of Laurie Anderson and Kate Bush. Parthenogenesis has arrived, men are doomed.

Not a female vocalist this time around, but when I finally succumbed to a certain writer's badgering to listen to 16 Horsepower, I cursed his name.

"Dammit, I'm going to end up buying everything they've done..."

In the past of course it's been Tracey Thorne, Throwing Muses/Kristen Hersh, Margot Timmins/Cowboy Junkies, PJ Harvey...

Interestingly enough it was a cover of a Bob Dylan song that led me to 16 Horsepower.

I'm finding most of my favorite female vocalists in foreign music now. I guess one can focus more on the voice when you have no idea what they're singing.

What Dylan did they cover? They do a good "Bad Moon Rising," BTW.

"Nobody 'Cept You," on the "Secret South" album. Not a Dylan song I know, admittedly, but the DJ that played it felt he had to point this out.

She has one of those that can't really be a human voices. Breathy, smooth, beautiful, and strange, like an articulate wind instrument.

yay, you're welcome!

I just realized how Mexi-themed this care package was. I swear I wasn't trying to drop hints! (Although that Chiapas-grown coffee IS mighty fine...) ;)

Your icon. I must have that pic. Oh. My. God.

I can email you the file, if you want, but I should warn you that it's pretty small and low-res.

so are you a fan of Mexico, Salma, or both? =)

Feel free to email!

I'm a fan of Salma and those traditional Adelita images, which she appears to be emulating there.

oh yeah. I'm assuming you've seen the Casasola collection?

I happen to study (in part) women's politics during the Mexican Revolution. =)

I hadn't seen the Casasola collection before now (I went and looked it up). My fondness for those images comes from the cheesy romantic art of Mexican restaurants and calendars (rolls eyes).

One of the things my wife studied in her PhD program at Brown was Latin American history, so I guess I get it from that side too (although a lot of what she covers when she's taught it is the horror show of US involvement.)

Wow, from sexy pics of Salma to CIA-funded torture. That thread went downhill fast. :(
