All right.
Sep. 11th, 2006 01:10 am| What the crap am I supposed to do with a baby squirrel? It approached me in the back yard, chattering quietly. I stepped back, thinking "Rabies," until I noticed how small and oddly-proportioned it was. It stood on my foot and shivered a little. I picked it up, and it curled up on me for warmth. I couldn't put it back -- a cat was watching -- so I brought it inside. Following the instructions on this site, some pointers from |
| My name is Prion, and your tag is sticking out. I do not want a pet squirrel -- especially a baby one that needs to be stimulated to pee. Gross. This is why I'm not a vet. It's a boy, by the way. I've called He's sleeping in a shoebox full of dish cloths right now. I'll bleach or discard everything the little parasite bomb touches. No Mad Squirrel Disease for me, thanks. |
Addendum: Looks like the Animal Rescue League in Boston has licensed wildlife rehabilitators. I'll call them tomorrow.
OMG!

Date: 2006-09-11 11:01 am (UTC)So you've caught Mad Baby Rodent Disease. Might as well read up on what to do and make sure that no matter where you live, you know who to call. "Cuz it'll happen again.
PS: "Wildlife rehab guys" is the right answer.

Date: 2006-09-11 07:08 pm (UTC)Sounds like you've been doing a really good job, though! I've been taking care of baby squirrels at a wildlife rescue center, and they're very affectionate. He looks pretty healthy, too, so he'll probably make it to adulthood.

Date: 2006-09-11 07:38 pm (UTC)im currently rehabbing a squirrel about the same age as yours looks to be.
Im guestimating the age of your little one to be about 6-7 weeks old possibly into the 8 week range.
First off, stop the soy, maple syrup etc and find some ESBILAC puppy formula. No other formula is really good for them. be it powder to mix or already to go liquid. Heat it ti a bit above room temp and feed it from a spoon or needless syringe. At the approx age this baby is, he should eat every 3-4 hours give or take.
Keep whole grain cereals such as cheerios in a bowl, along with carrotas, strawberries grapes sweet potato etc. Please limit any nuts you may offer, they are high in phosphorus and can causecalcium to not be absorbed by the baby and cause him to get metabolic bone disease.
Stimulating to pee and poop is a must, they CAN go on their on, but typically its just a leakage from an over filled bladder and they can rupture.
Keep little one room temp and above, its fully furred so with warm blankets can actually keep his own temp well.
Im sure ill think of more or if ya have questions please do ask.
Where are you located?

Date: 2006-09-11 08:28 pm (UTC)I had been succesfully stimulating him to pee by tickling his business with a wet Q-tip. Ew.
I've just turned him over to The Cummings School, so Tufts vets are caring for him now, and they'll pass him on to a rehabber. Oh, and he pooped all over my hand by way of thanks. ;P

Date: 2006-09-11 09:16 pm (UTC)We did the baby squirrel thing too.
Date: 2006-09-11 09:32 pm (UTC)Now, We did the whole baby squirrel thing for a while, had 3 baby greys, they cried like every couple hours for a week or two, they were tiny as hell, the mother was squashed and the nest was squirmming witht he 3 nearly hairless babys, we fed them an animal formula a mixture of puppy formula and i'm pretty sure oatmeal, for about a month they got to eating small sunflower seed inners and other things, grew up and we let them outside at my uncles house... but they always came back. they would play on the back deck and go sleep somewhere over night, then the next morning be out there playing and if anyone went out onto that deck theyd come right up to them, sit on your knee while they ate and then took off. eventually they got into doing thier own things and grew up outside.
They climb everything if inside, not the best of pets to have unless you have a tall cage with a hallowed log n stuff for em, depends if you want to keep him or let him go, there should be great sites out there full of info whatever you decide, well, good luck with him!
