nGeh. Of course, after just getting out of an Institute pandemic planning session, my first thought is "ironic that an avian flu carrier would be a doctor"
about as fucked as we were with sars - which is not really. imho. big hubbub, but i believe there is little actual risk - the planning w are doing wrt avian flu has applications for anything where a congregation/shelter in place protocol would not be wise. the sparkies, however, give an estimate of IF avian flu has a htoh transmission vector and IF it spreads beyond the affected SE asian zones and IF it isn't controlled by cdc immediately, that it would take approx 30-50% of people out of work/operation which will affect supply chain and other issues. also, the producer of tamiflu is regulating how much can be purchased so that the US can't buy it all. so the potential of panic is very real esp when it becomes known that most places here can dose/give dosage for approximately 1 of every 10 people.
but really? i think its mostly just sparkies. unfort, the masses are easy to panic.
the planning process and the drills and tabletop sessions are kinda neat though. how often at your job can you say you planned for your hospitals being full, death, where you are going to create a morgue (the icerink for us), disaster recovery, supply chain issues, logistics? I have a tabletop strategic planning session in a month where I get to plan for battle and warfare :) a retaliatory strike with 30 min to plan and one that we have 4 days + to plan. yai! (supposedly they are using it to teach the emergency operation center personnel how to respond in crises. kinda cool.)
