Go see it in the theater. Gunshots are supposed to unsettle you.

Also: Not the feel-good movie of the year, K?

I would like to see this, just because the plot is one that has been done over and over, mostly by B-movie hacks, and I'd like to see what a "real" director makes of it.

If nothing else, it has the best low-speed chase scene I've ever seen.

"It was so hot today, I saw a dog chasing a cat, and they were both walking?"

I think that the dog and cat probably walked faster, even if they had stopped to rest.

Yes: Gravity-powered and mud-hindered.

I was going to see this movie last night, but decided on Stomp The Yard instead, which I have to say I enjoyed a lot.

If you can appreciate the different styles of dancing in the movie, which is a combination of break-dancing, stomp stuff, crump/krump and clownin', then you will really like it. It also had a deeper story line then I expected, which was nice.

I wonder if The White Plague was inspiration at all...

Haven't read it, but I think the catastrophe would be very different in a worldwide loss-of-females scenario. The psychologic impact would be waayyy different, for starters. Then there's the problem of having only crazy-frustrated (90% of them, anyway) male decision-makers in one setting, while both male and female leaders exist in the other. Oh, and you could still make babies in the female-death world, by preserving eggs from the few remaining women (even if they're already dying -- the germ line is pretty isolated from the rest of the body)...

But yeah, the world would go to shit really quick, either way.

Go see the movie! :)

Sorry -- went off on a tangent. Yes, maybe the writers were inspired by the concept of impending extinction via failure to reproduce. I imagine that theme has come up a number of times -- dunno if Frank did it first. :)

In the P.D. James book (which came out a decade after the Herbert book), it's male infertility, which makes a little more sense than global female infertility or die-off.

Herbert wasn't that optimistic. His book fortold of an IRA bomb that killed a scientist's wife and child infront of him. He got mad at the world. Engineered a plague killed only women. Then after the world was in turmoil he went out on a quest to find any progress for finding a cure, so that he could sabotage it. But the ever-pitiful irish countryside and the suffering he witnesses causes him to realize what he's done just in time to go mad and run off into oblivion. I wasn't suprised, after four books of Dune I was prepared for the epic anticlimax.

one scene though, was amazing. two people trapped in an iron vault, the woman gives birth to a girl. and they contemplate life, suffering, a name for a baby fit for a quick death, and how sad irish folklore is... some good dialogue. but i'm not a fan of existentialism anymore.

i had quite a few throw-book-across-room moments with that one. but that was when the world was far from sad. i don't see the point these days of going to a movie that's supposed to "open your eyes", and make some big point. it's not like anyone sees a flag half mast and can't come up with at least ten reasons off the top of your head for another day of mourning.

though blood diamond may be the one last eye opener americans need to see. nobody wants to beleive that buying diamonds kills lots of innocent people. though, it's not a long drink of water, knowing that it's ok not to waste money on a scam.... it's easier to swallow than supersize me. i hate how yummy poison tastes. damn mcdonalds.
