Emo protest. Violent emo protest. IN MEXICO. Look who it took to disperse the mobs.

This is real, folks, and there's too much AMAZING to translate. Get thee a Spanish speaker, or ask me in person. The pile of related media clips is too much -- my brain will melt out my ears if I don't stop.

Shout-out to [livejournal.com profile] halo.

Edit: Halo mentioned that many Mexemos are gay. We think the persecution is largely buttsex-related.

sooooo....the gist of it was the emos vs punks and it was broken up by the hare krishnas?

that certainly beats the brighton beach riots in the late 60's between the mods and the rockers...

There is definitely a homophobic element to it. That footage is from a subway station a few blocks from where I used to live, and it was always full of gay teenage couples dressed like that, and poking around a bit reading about this, there have evidently been a lot of homophobic slurs mixed into these riots. I am not surprised, however, that the Mexican media has failed to highlight that aspect.

Thanks. I assumed that it was some kind of "boom" in something, but I wasn't sure what.

I tried "Emoes" but that looked all wrong, and "Emos" looked wrong too, like a corruption of the name "Enos," which is all kinds of hillbilly, so...

It's like writing "anuses." It just doesn't look right, but "ani" is worse.

As much as I hate Emo here in Boston, why is it that all I can think is that being a Gay Mexemos is rather cool?

Probably its because being a moody bisexual white boy with a bad haircut in Allston is just not rebellion these days, whereas being an outspoken queer subversive in a very machismo culture still is. (Or maybe its just my Latin Fever.)

I need to wait till I get home for a full translation, my spanish is still weak.

Wait I know why its cool. It reminds me of the Burlesque Revival.

ie: "Emo is to Latino, as Feminist is to Stripper."

It makes no sense on paper, but in reality it kind of makes a lot of sense. To me anyway.

"emo" might be new in Mexico, but trust me, pushing gender paradigms is not (there is a 17th century radical feminist, and possibly also lesbian nun on Mexican money, for one thing!). The riot pictured in the video was also at the metro station in Mexico City closest to a well-established gay neighborhood ("the pink zone"), where the clubs that a lot of these kids go to are located.

Speaking of burlesque, I have also heard that some of the best drag burlesque clubs in the world are in Mexico City, but have been told that women are not welcome. Sad! I should find out if it's true...

I should hope not. :) But a few historic radicals vs. an entire youth subculture is a huge leap for the public image of Mexico. (The LA Zoot Suiters scared the crap out of the locals once upon a time too, but I don't know how many of them were gay. I wonder if there are any statistics?)

Also not surprised. Even in Boston, mixing drag & burlesque sometimes takes effort (Truth Serum strikes a pretty good balance).

Which is funny, because long before I got into burlesque I wanted to be a Drag Queen, but happened to be female to begin with. ;P I always felt that's how the whole BurlyQ & DIY Homemaker stuff started -- feminists reclaiming their femininity, which were two opposing concepts 10-30 years ago.

I guess what I was trying to say is that I don't see it as that big of a leap, really. There has been a huge punk, goth, and metal scene (or scenes) in Mexico for decades, and also a large and vibrant gay community. You should see the gay pride parade in Mexico City, some time... it's mindblowingly over the top. Holy Mother of Plastic Surgery!

I will say that I have been really impressed with the emo gay teenage couples I've seen in that part of the city, openly making out with one another in public... that's definitely new, at least to me-- in all the time I've spent in Mexico City, I've only seen that within the past few years.

what were they protesting.... happiness?

Date: 2008-03-29 06:41 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] lepidosiren.livejournal.com
Nope. They were protesting physical and psychological attacks from non-emo folks who hate them. I believe the persecution is spurred by homophobia, not funny clothes and whiny attitudes.

Quite a spectacle, though, huh?

I can't remember the last time I so much idiocy packed into a two-minute clip.

But the hare krishna resolution was fun. Could've only been improved if it had been ninjas.
