Today I went to my first Wing Chun class. Quick impressions:


1. Wait, what did you just do?

NO I CANNOT DO THAT NO

2. Sure, I can hold this stance.

FOR AN HOUR NOT SO MUCH

3. I learned six blocks today.

ALL LOOK SAME

4. The Seven Elbows, huh? Seven.

I'M FIVE SHORT MY GOOD MAN


I'll try again on Thursday.

Wing Chun was developed by Ng Mui, a nun at the Shaolin Temple for girls. Ng Mui was the kung fu sister of Gee Sim, the abbott of the temple and founder of my style Hung Gar.

I had heard/read of this, but different sources tell various different stories. All the versions I've seen do involve one woman as the principal figure in the art's development. Here (http://home.vtmuseum.org/articles/meng/misconceptions.php)'s one set of "corrections" to "misconceptions," but I have no idea which sources are accurate.

i used to go there too, back when classes were held in a dance studio at mit (and then outside in the summer). for about seven months i think? and then i started at massart and all my free time went poof.
