The ONLY reason this would be even a remotely good idea is if you plan to 'flip' the thing by restoring it and selling it (at a loss because that's how it works with car stuff).
Look around for a Big Block. It's just as simple, it's just as fun, and when you're done with the restoration, you can drop it into your Olds with no modifications. 454s are good motors.
You'll get to actually use what you've fixed up - and a car with a big block is fun to uh, explore the limits of physics with.
A Slant 6 is a great engine, has a cult following and people will hunt for them, so there's that, too.
Barracuda's and Darts usually had them. You'd sometimes see them in the bigger bodies too.
I saw a guy that actually had a 70 - 72 'Cuda with a slant six (rare). He dumped a bunch of cash into it instead of swapping and got @225 horse out of it.
Wow, I had one of those (or something similar) in my 83 Plymouth Fury. Nice engine, so not a sexy car (I bought it from our family mechanic after the city plumbing inspector turned it in for a new vehicle). The supply of used toothpicks and remnant of the City of Waltham seal on the door were extras.
hah! awesome! these engines were a nugget. Is this what the shot peened rods are for?
these were sold in the Australian Valiants as well, before they changed to the locally designed Hemi six cylinder engine (with the triple weber option, yeah baby!)
Here's one that got an EFI conversion! http://www.performanceforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=67223877&highlight=valiant+efi
Hahaha. Nope, my friends talked me out of buying the slant six. The rods are for an even stupider idea: I'd like to build a destroked small block Chevrolet V8 using the rods and crank from an L99 ("baby LT1") and a 1987+ (non-LT1) 350 block. Hypothetically, it should rev to 7500RPM, and sound beautiful doing it.
Oh, and I just bought a set of unused forged pistons for a 502 big block on eBay. The full set of eight cost me less than a single piston should. I have no other big block parts or plans yet, but how could I pass that up?
The best part is that I've never really turned a wrench before. ;P

The Valiant EFI setup looks fantastic.
