Let the Right One In was very good. The low-affect, "flat" tone of the movie is highly effective. Kinda wish I'd read the book, first. One brief, unsettling interaction between two characters hinted at some serious backstory. There's also something that doesn't look quite right, and I know the book explains it. (The movie was merciful enough to only suggest.)

I really enjoyed that movie as well, however hearing the book has 'more' scares me some.

Sadly I hear a hollywood remake is in the works. :(

No, the remake will be awesome. Explosions, CGI, boobs, clever one-liners, dizzying camera work, simpler characters, theme music, product placement... I can't wait.

I think I know exactly what the two things you mention are. Which would be spoilers for anybody that didn't see it yet, of course.

I have the book, if you'd like to borrow it--I saw the movie first, and actually liked experiencing the movie and book in that order, because my mental images of the locations and people were so strong. The movie really meshed perfectly with the book in that regard. It was very faithful as an adaptation, but you are right, there is much more explication of what did not look quite right, and other backstory items.

Yep, we saw it in the theatre--I had read enough about it that i was excited and didn't want to wait for the DVD. My excitement definitely was rewarded! You are totally welcome to borrow the book too.

Yes, when she said "I'm not a girl," she wasn't just talking about her vampire status. It's in the book, which I have not read yet.

To which unsettling interaction were you referring? There are so many from which to choose!

The book goes into how the not-a-girlness came about in rather excruciating detail. It's probably worse than most things one might imagine.

Oh, I know. It got leaked to me.

I would still like to know what "unsettling interaction" Mr. Lepido meant. Floor licking?

1. Ah, so that was a castration scar.
2. The older gentleman who hunts for Eli is a pedophile: He's jealous when Eli sees Oskar. Eli feels pity for the older man, and touches his face. The older man is disproportionately affected by this physical contact.

MORE SPOILER STUFF

I did not know about the pedo thing.
I have not read the book, but was he originally a pedo, or does he just still love Eli after many years of hunting? After 50-60 years, will the new boy be another crazy, bumbling keeper, careless killing people in the woods? I have got to get this book.

BOOK SPOILER!!!

It's a mix--Eli finds men with pedophiliac tendencies and exploits that so that s/he can have a protector and an adult cover. He might never have acted on his pedophiliac impulses if left to his own devises, but Eli calculatedly seduced him.

I guess even in Sweden that's a little much to put on film...

Hmmm... isn't that the country that gave us "The Little Red Schoolbook?"

No, wait. That was Denmark. Never mind.

Regarding 2, I read it as he was young when Eli found him, too. So Oskar is his replacement.

This is my "not a spoiler" comment! As opposed to the other one.

I had a real "Sling Blade" reaction to the end. You see 'something' coming down the road, lights on, horn blaring, weaving side to side and you know, it's going to be bad.

So by the time I got to the pool I was cringing. I didn't know how it was going to swing, but I knew it would be rough. Lo, I was right. Very effective scene.

Apropos of nothing except this post made me wonder- apparently in midwinter Stockholm gets ~6 hours of daylight. Northern Sweden gets nothing.

Arrrgh. Remind me not to go. Brown People might also wish to avoid.
