OK. Say you want to eat steak for dinner. You want it to be nicer than Frank's, but less pricey than Coach Grill. Ah! Say you want a Tango-level steak, only you don't feel like going to Tango. Where do you go?

to their website, where you get hungry and end up eating a lunchable, apparently.

you know, the evenings when I have to work late, being two blocks away from Sel De La Terre and being able to pick up a plate of their steak frites for $12 definitely softens the blow.

The Stockyard is just a bit higher than Frank's on the ambiance scale, and still has that old school townie establishment feel, but their steak is pretty tasty as well.

There's also tons of meaty goodness at the Midwest Grill, but getting served rodizio style doesn't quite have the visceral pleasure of having a honest-to-goodness steak delivered to your plate, y'know?

2 words: Prix Fixe

And I work for a couple fine dining places so I've got the scoop ;)

Mooo... does a 3 course $20 lunch prix fixe everyday (I think? I have to double check if it is on weekends) with a bloody fantastic (pun intended) steak on there. There is a very good reason the restaurant is called "Mooo"

$7 above your price point (but includes appetizer + dessert) are the dinner prix fixe menus. Mooo... has a $35 dinner 3 course prix fixe on Sundays & Mondays and I'm pretty sure it has steak on there too.Mistral has steak on their prix fixe (Sun/Mon 3 courses, $35). Haven't eaten it, but having eaten other of their foods, it's likely to be phenomenal. Now if wood-grilled tickles your fancy, out in Burlington is L'Andana, and they have steak on their 3 course $35 prix fixe dinner Sun-Fri.

Damn. Now I'm hungry :(

NP! A lot of fine dining places have a prix fixe menu on certain days, esp given the economic times. It's always an option to look at when you don't want to spend ridiculous prices and want a full meal :)

oh, yes, indeed. It's grand to see a restaurant that actually gives you choices for a prix fixe beyond fish/meat/veg. Grander still for all of the choices to also be good quality.

Get on a rotational order from a farm so that your freezer always has meat in it better than what most restaurants are serving because it hasn't been seasoned with fear and suffering.

Pfft. What's meat without fear and suffering? Pass the manatee. (http://lepidosiren.livejournal.com/804269.html)

Seriously, though: I've never made steak at home. I should buy some happy grass-fed meat and learn to prepare it.

Basically, if you don't own a grill, you want to get a cast iron skillet as hot as you can possibly get it, rub the meat with a bit of oil, salt and pepper, and hit both sides for as short a time as possible (on different parts of the pan, even, if you can manage it), and then if you don't like it medium rare, move it to an oven to coast up to medium. let it rest before you cut it or all the water comes rushing out all at once and the thing will tighten up like a bike seat.

People get into all kinds of weird sauces, rubs and butters with steak. I have no idea why. You're paying ultra-premium prices for a top cut of meat. It should taste like meat.

If you can't find a farm to connect with, The Evil known as Whole Foods sells nothing but humanely raised and butchered meats. But their mark-up is actually worse than dealing directly with a small farmer.

Many small meat vendors are haunting farmer's markets these days, so that may be the easiest place to start if you can find one.
