Nov. 24th, 2010 10:53 pmThe original Weimann center-pull caliper brakes are back in place. They are the only sensible choice for this project: The price is right (free, in the spare parts way); they will not require frequent adjustments (as single-pivot side-pull brakes might); they have sufficient reach for the new 700C rims (though the original 27" rims were slightly taller); they clear the original fenders nicely.
I'll need new brake pads.
The fenders cleaned up very nicely with just soap and water. The fender stays and the rack required steel wool and WD-40.
Re-installing the fenders and rack was a gigantic pain in the ass. I had originally intended to omit them, so I neglected to take photographs of a few assembly details. Important hardware bits went AWOL, so I had to find replacements. A couple of malleable parts needed re-shaping. Most importantly, I've been asleep on my feet all day. All worth it, though. Oh. The front fenderline isn't quite right, and I still have to bolt the low anterior edge of the rear fender in place. Too tired right now.
This is taking forever, but it's coming together nicely.
